Review of the Hurtta Summit Parka
I am ashamed to admit that there was a time, not so long ago, that I thought dog coats were silly. Dogs have fur, right? What could be warmer than that?! It was not until I adopted Charlotte, my blue heeler mix, that l learned how wrong I was. Charlotte is short-coated, small and very lean. She is a bonafide adventure pup, but she gets cold easily. The Summit Parka by Hurtta has been a game-changer for her this winter season in Colorado. From snow days in the Front Range to early morning ski runs along the Continental Divide, this jacket has enabled her to adventure hard in comfort and style.
Hurtta describes the Summit Parka as “highly technical” on their own website, and I would have to wholeheartedly agree. Right out of the box, the first thing you will notice about the Summit Parka is the quality. If it weren’t for the funny shape, you’d almost want to claim this jacket for yourself! From the water-resistant shell and the full-fleece lining to the customizable fit – this jacket has what it takes to keep your dog cozy, comfortable and warm in the harshest of conditions. When Charlotte’s jacket arrived, it was a smidge too big for her (a result of some confusing sizing, which I will touch on below). However, thanks to some smartly placed adjustment points, I was able to dial in a custom fit that worked for all of Charlie’s active endeavors and the extra room meant I could layer this jacket in extreme cold.
Here are a few things I loved about the Summit Parka:
- Machine Washable!
- Easy to put on/take off
- Customizable fit w/ variable back length, collar, and belt
- Waterproof and wind resistant
- Covers hindquarters, chest, and stomach
- Back leg loops keep jacket in place
But did Charlotte Like It?
As an owner, I was very impressed with this piece of gear but, more importantly, Charlotte was impressed too! How do I know? Because the girl didn’t skip a beat in her adventuring. I’ve seen Charlotte run all-out in this jacket and she hardly seems to notice it. It keeps her hindquarters, stomach, and chest warm, so she is a happier dog all-around while adventuring in cold temperatures. This Summit Parka pretty much travels with Charlotte on every outing now. She loves to wear this jacket for cold car rides to/from the trailhead and for frigid, early morning skinning sessions up and down the mountain!
Honestly, I don’t have much to criticize about the Summit Parka. However, I did struggle quite a bit with sizing Charlotte for the jacket. There are A LOT of different sizes that this jacket is available in. At first, this made sense to me because dogs come in A LOT of different shapes and sizes. But after I measured Charlotte and found her little body didn’t quite conform to any of the available sizes, I was lost. I took a guess and it did turn out a bit large, but now I know better for next time!
If you and your pup find yourself adventuring in extreme weather conditions, the Summit Parka would be a great addition to your gear closet. The quality and craftsmanship are top-notch and definitely worth the investment!
